Things to try out for the first time in your retirement

 
 

We recently asked all the members of our Boomers’ Money Club to share what it was they most recently did for the first time, and what’s next on the list. There were lots of great ideas on there so we thought we’d share them with you…


The last things they did for the first time were…

  1. Went to the Tower of London

  2. Learnt to make Japanese paper toadstools

  3. Walked 300 miles for Macmillan Cancer Care and raised £54,000 to fund an additional nurse for Gloucestershire & Oxfordshire

  4. Waved my daughter off to Australia

  5. Haggled for a teapot in Marrakech

  6. Started adding Pilates to my daily routine

  7. Made wild garlic pesto

  8. Sorted out my recently deceased father’s affairs

  9. Spent the winter in Spain for 3 months from Nov 23 to Jan 24

  10. Visited Cambodia

  11. Moved to Greece

  12. Had a sleepover in the Egyptian Gallery at the British Museum

  13. Put a grandchild to bed

  14. Swam with whale sharks

  15. Crewed a yacht across the Atlantic from Tenerife to Saint George in Grenada

  16. Bought an iPhone after years of resisting

  17. Looked into inheritance tax rules

  18. Took a sleeper train to Berlin

  19. Made a BBQ for one

  20. Retired from work

  21. Played golf in Ireland - first time since starting golf about 25 years ago

  22. Had a dental implant

  23. Went to North Africa and walked up a mountain

  24. Went jet skiing

  25. Organised my daughter’s wedding

  26. Went to the 24 heures du Mans motor race at the Circuit de la Sarthe near Le Mans, France

  27. Took my granddaughter to the zoo

  28. Worked out how to use a washing machine after 45 years at sea - under supervision of course

  29. Donated a kidney

  30. Learnt to row (scull and sweep) on the water, last autumn and rowed in a regatta in April this year

  31. Started an over 60s 11-a-side footy team from scratch - we entered the national over 60s tournament

  32. Started a new (paid) part-time job post retirement

  33. Replaced fuel hoses on a 1972 Triumph X-75 Hurricane motorcycle

  34. Done a 13-mile hike including 3 Munros

  35. Went for a father & son epic road trip to Tennessee and parts of Mississippi and Alabama, taking in the music of Nashville and Memphis, plus Civil War history sites

  36. Baked bread

  37. Went river paddle boarding

  38. Went on a flight in a two-man micro plane in Australia

  39. Walked the Camino Way to Santiago de Compostela

  40. Rode the Severn Bore.

  41. Participated in a 80 mile cycling sportief

  42. 10 pull ups

  43. Booked a cruise to the States

  44. Renewed the sealant around my bath

  45. Private dining in a fancy French restaurant in London

  46. A first holiday in mainland Spain - Frigiliana

  47. Bell ringing

  48. Diluted my cash investments to less than 10% of my investment portfolio

  49. Kite surfing

  50. A long weekend in Stockholm. What a truly beautiful city, despite the cold!

  51. 4 day motorbike trip through the Cederburg and Tankwa Karoo in South Africa

  52. Sky dived in Malaysia

  53. Played the piano at a funeral and a wedding during the same month (this March)

  26. Take my wife sailing for the first time, at 70 years old

  27. Fly first class

  28. Go to the opera in Verona

  29. Play in the 1/4 finals

  30. Fit a new bike rack to my car and drive off for a ride along Tissington Trail in the Peak District

  31. Ride a 1972 Triumph X-75 Hurricane motorcycle further than ten miles

  32. Buy an electric mountain bike to help get to and from the bottom of remote mountains

  33. Have my prostate removed

  34. Lay a gravel garden path

  35. Paddle board while on holiday in North Devon this summer

  36. Go to Paris to see the Roland Garros tennis competition

  37. Cycle round Ynys Môn on a Brompton

  38. Barbecue some aubergine and eat it without grimacing

  39. Learn to single scull and compete in a British Rowing event - a regatta or head of the river

  40. Take our two teenage daughters to their first gig at Brixton Academy

  41. Travel across the States - east to west

  42. Attempt to stop my back door from creaking and squeezing. Just been and bought the WD40

  43. Fly fishing lesson in 2 weeks time

  44. Visit the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres

  45. Controlling a church organ with a PC

  46. Take a regular income of 1.5% per year in monthly instalments

  47. Kite skiing

  48. Flying to Naples and then taking the ferry to Ischia for a short break

  49. Go to Namibia

  50. Dive in Maldives

  51. Visiting Mauritius for work and not for holiday
